What Is NMN?
NMN, or Nicotinamide Mononucleotide, is a naturally occurring molecule in your body. It serves as a precursor or key ingredient for the formation of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD), an essential molecule found in all living cells that supports cellular energy production.
How it works
NMN is converted into NAD through a series of biochemical reactions. Inside the cell, NAD transports food energy molecules to the mitochondria, the cell’s power plants, and facilitates their conversion into cellular energy.
The effectiveness of NAD supplements like NMN relies on its ability to enter the cell. Specifically, NMN utilises the Slc12a8 transporter for cell entry, a pathway unique to NMN. Research indicates that in conditions of low NAD levels, such as ageing or certain health conditions, the body naturally increases Slc12a8 levels, suggesting NMN’s potential enhanced effectiveness in restoring NAD+ levels under these circumstances.
